Pupils help businesses brighten up their town

School children from Penwortham teamed up members of the local business community and Penwortham Town Council for a gardening and litter picking session at Hill Road Cemetery. The youngsters from St Teresa’s RC Primary School helped plant 200 daffodil bulbs which will create a carpet of colour next Spring.

James Horne, lead gardener at the cemetery, handed out spades and trowels and showed the volunteers where and how to plant the flowers.

The planting session was arranged by Penwortham Business Network founders Jemma Lloyd from Vincents Solicitors and estate agent Michael Bailey, along with Michelle Woodward from Radiant Financial and Emma Evans Funeral Services.

It is the group’s second community get-together, following a litter pick in March, and the members hope both the clean-up and the planting sessions will become an annual feature on the town’s calendar.

Jemma said: “It was a wonderful morning, the sun was shining and everyone was full of enthusiasm. James was fantastic and gave us all some great tips to help us to identify weeds, plant bulbs, and generally look after the outdoors.

“The St Teresa’s children were amazing, they were so enthusiastic and loved getting muddy and finding worms. They all said they can’t wait to see the daffodils come out early next spring, everyone will feel very proud to see the cemetery brightened up I’m sure.”
